This week we’re heading to Portland Bill Lighthouse and remembering the unforgettable diaphone fog signal — that deep, resonant, blast that once echoed across the English Channel, warning ships away from the notorious Portland Race. The diaphone fog signal at Portland Bill was discontinued in 1996, when Trinity House withdrew many traditional fog signals around the UK as modern electronic navigation systems (such as GPS) had become standard. Portland Bill’s powerful diaphone had been a familiar and much-loved sound along the Dorset coast for decades before it finally fell silent. 🎧 #ThrowbackThursday 🌊 Today we’re shining 🎧 #ThrowbackThursday 🌊 Today we’re shining a light on our own ALK Keeping Watch Podcast. 🎙️ This Week on the Podcast We’re heading back to our ALK President, Gerald Butler — former keeper with the Commissioners of Irish Lights. A third-generation lighthouse keeper, Gerald joined the service in 1969 and spent much of his career as an Assistant Keeper on some of Ireland’s most iconic stations: Bull Rock, Fastnet Rock, the Old Head of Kinsale and Mizen Head. He was serving on the Fastnet during the infamous 1979 Fastnet Yacht Race, when devastating storms struck, impacting more than 300 yachts and tragically claiming 19 lives. In this episode, Gerald shares his memories of that fateful weekend, along with reflections on a lifetime in the lighthouse service. ⚓ Tune in for a powerful and personal insight into lighthouse life.
